The Charleswood Hawks are deeply saddened to share the passing of Larry Ring, a man whose dedication, vision, and heart helped shape our organization and our community for more than three decades.
Larry served on the Charleswood Hawks Board of Directors for over 30 years, giving his time, his energy, and his unwavering belief in what this team could be. He was a steady presence, a trusted voice, and a builder in every sense of the word.
His impact stretched far beyond the board. Larry was instrumental in the long‑term success of the Rob/West Tournament now called the Fall Classic, helping turn it into a signature event that brought families together and created lasting memories for young players across our city.
Larry was also the driving force behind the Hawks’ international hockey involvement, a chapter of our history that stands out as one of the most unique and ambitious undertakings in junior hockey. Because of Larry’s vision and leadership:
In 1995, the Hawks hosted and played two games against the Hungarian National Junior Team.
In 1996, they welcomed the Swedish National Under‑18 Team, a roster that produced six future NHL players.
In 1997, the Hawks hosted the defending U.S. College Hockey League champions, St. John’s University Johnnies from Minnesota.
And in 2003, the Hawks welcomed the United States Hockey League Junior Champions, the Minnesota Ice Hawks.These events didn’t just happen — Larry made them happen. His belief in showcasing our community, our players, and our program on an international stage was unmatched.
Around Eric Coy, Larry’s presence was unmistakable. His smile was contagious, the kind that lifted the room and made people feel welcome the moment they walked in. Whether he was greeting volunteers, chatting with parents, Larry brought a warmth and positivity that made the rink feel like home.
Larry didn’t do any of this for recognition. He did it because he cared — about the Hawks, about the kids, and about the community he loved.
His legacy is woven into the history of our organization and the lives of the people who had the privilege of working alongside him. No one will ever replace Larry. His presence, his leadership, and his quiet strength were truly one of a kind.
To Larry’s family, friends, and all who knew him: We share in your loss, and we honour a man who gave so much of himself to all of us.
Larry will always be part of the Charleswood Hawks.
